Nourishing Your Body for the Season Ahead: Gentle Ways to Support Your Immune System and Energy

Even as a nutrition and wellness coach, I still get sick sometimes.

Right now, I’m moving through some kind of virus that’s decided to take up space in my body—and yes, my little one (who lovingly brings home the germs from the schoolyard) is doing her part to keep my immune system on its toes.

This time of year can feel like your body’s a little slower, your energy dips, and your system is adjusting to the seasonal shift. So if you’re feeling a little off, low-energy, or like your immune system is working overtime right now, you’re not alone.

Transitioning from summer to fall is always a tender time for the body. We’re coming down from the heat, the busyness, the travel, and the longer days. Our systems crave grounding, warmth, and deeper rest—even if our calendars haven’t quite gotten the memo.

At The Mindful Brew, we’re all about tuning into those signals and responding with grounded, nourishing care. Not because you have to do more, but because this is a time to return to what supports you.

Here’s what’s been helping me get back on track—gently and sustainably—as I move through this moment and into fall–which sidebar is my favorite season sans the germy germs and illnesses.

1. Come Back to Warm, Nourishing Foods

After months of lighter summer eating, fall invites us into warmth.

When I’m feeling run down, I reach for foods that feel comforting and easy to digest. Nothing fancy—just real, grounding nourishment.

A few go-tos:

  • Brothy soups with veggies and warming spices

  • Roasted root vegetables like carrots, squash, and sweet potatoes

  • rice or quinoa bowl with the extra broth

  • Warm oatmeal with cinnamon and a spoonful of almond butter

Simple meals that feel like care. Easy to digest, rich in minerals, and gentle on the body.

Try this practice:
Sip a warm mug of ginger and lemon tea—nothing fancy, just a quiet moment of warmth. Let your shoulders drop. Let yourself pause.

2. Get Morning Light (Even If It’s Cloudy)

As daylight starts to shift, your body benefits from early exposure to natural light—even if it’s through cloud cover.

It doesn’t need to be complicated:

  • Step outside with your tea/coffee

  • Open your blinds as you make breakfast

  • Take a 5-minute walk before diving into your day

This helps recalibrate your internal clock, supports your immune rhythm, and can lift your mood—especially during those “blah” transitional days.

3. Hydrate Like You Mean It

After the heat of summer and with fall’s dry air creeping in, your body needs more hydration than you think.

  • Add lemon or a pinch of sea salt to your water to replenish minerals.

  • Keep a glass of water at your bedside and drink it first thing in the morning.

  • Herbal teas count, too—especially ones with ginger, tulsi, or elderberry.

  • I also have Vitamin C packets that I place in my water

4. Rest, Even When You Don’t Feel “Sick Enough”

This is a big one—especially for those of us who are used to pushing through.

Fall is a natural time of slowing down. Your body knows this. Give yourself permission to rest without guilt, even if you’re “just a little tired.”

This isn’t about fixing yourself—it’s about honoring yourself.

If you have a little one (like I do), rest might not look like hours of uninterrupted sleep. But even five minutes with your eyes closed, or a slower morning can make a difference.

5. Support Your Nervous System

Your immune system and nervous system are deeply connected. If one is depleted, the other feels it.

Some gentle ways to regulate and reset:

  • Deep belly breathing for 2 minutes

  • Putting one hand on your heart and one on your belly

  • Listening to calming music or nature sounds (I started a new playlist recently called Tame the Beast. It includes Moonlight Sonata).

  • Saying a grounding affirmation

You don’t have to “do it all”—even one of these is enough.

A Gentle Reminder:

You’re allowed to slow down.
You’re allowed to be human.
You’re allowed to rest, even when the world keeps moving.

Getting sick doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
Needing rest doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
It just means you’re human—and your body is wise.

Wellness is a relationship, not a destination. One you get to return to, again and again, with gentleness and grace. Also, sometimes being under the weather is a part of being alive. It’s how we respond with care, that matters most.

Mindful Takeaway

Try this simple practice to reconnect with your breath, body, and heart:
Sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes.
Take three slow, intentional breaths.
On the inhale, say to yourself: “I receive.”
On the exhale, say: “I release.”
Let each breath be a small act of care.

Affirmation for the Season

“I honor what my body needs. I nourish myself with warmth, rest, and presence.”
