Because your day deserves more than just survival mode.
Let me start with a truth you already know in your bones: being a creative person is beautiful, but it can also be chaotic.
One day you’re flowing with ideas at 6 a.m. The next, you’re staring at the ceiling at noon wondering why your brain feels like it’s buffering. And if you’re anything like me, you’re trying to balance passion, purpose, and a real need for peace—all before lunch.
That’s why morning rituals matter. Especially for us creative folks. Especially for my folks. Especially when the world is loud and your mind is louder.
But don’t worry—this isn’t about perfection. This is about intention. And yes, there’s coffee involved. ☕️
Why Mornings Matter (Even If You’re Not a Morning Person)
Let’s be real: mornings set the tone. And I’m not talking about those crazy productivity routines where someone wakes up at 4:30 a.m., drinks chlorophyll water, runs a 10K, and writes a novel before 7.
I’m talking about anchoring yourself before the day starts pulling you in a million directions.
Studies show that having a consistent morning ritual can reduce stress, improve focus, and even regulate your nervous system (Harvard Medical School, 2022). Not to sound too coach-y, but your brain literally functions better when it doesn’t start the day in fight-or-flight mode.
So no, you don’t need to wake up at the crack of dawn. But you do need to wake up for yourself first—before you start waking up for everyone and everything else.
The Coffee Moment: Make It Sacred
For me, it starts with a cup.
Not a rushed, “let me microwave what’s left in the pot” kind of cup. But a pause.
I let the kettle boil. I grind my beans or open my protein coffee blend. I choose my mug like it matters (because it does). I breathe.
This isn’t just about caffeine—it’s about creating space. Even if it’s five minutes. Even if there are emails waiting or toddlers crying or a to-do list giving you side-eye.
Your coffee ritual is your first boundary. Let it be sacred.
The 5-Minute Mindful Creative Ritual (That You Can Actually Stick To)
If you’re short on time, here’s a grounding morning ritual designed specifically for busy creatives. It’s simple, sensory, and soul-nourishing.
1. Brew & Breathe (2 mins)
As your coffee brews, just breathe. No phone. No TV. Just you and your breath. Let the scent of the brew pull you into your body.
“Inhale focus. Exhale pressure.”
2. Set Your Creative Intention (1 min)
Ask yourself: What do I want to create today?
Not just content—but energy, space, or ease.
Write it down or say it out loud. It’s your mini-manifesto for the day.
3. Move or Stretch (2 mins)
Creativity lives in your body—not just your brain. Do a shoulder roll. Stand and stretch. Walk around the room. Shake off yesterday.
Bonus tip: Play a 2-minute feel-good song. Let it move through you.
Why This Works (Without Getting Too Technical)
Routines don’t just keep us organized—they keep us regulated.
Your nervous system loves rhythm. When you start your day with intention, you teach your body it’s safe to create, explore, and show up. Studies have linked mindful morning practices to lower cortisol levels, better decision-making, and even reduced anxiety symptoms (American Psychological Association, 2021).
But forget the studies for a second—you’ll feel it.
More clarity. Less chaos. More you in your day.
For My People
If you’re part of my community—Black, creative, constantly doing the most—you deserve softness.
We weren’t built to hustle from sunup to burnout. Your rest is resistance. Your joy is nourishment. Your creativity is sacred.
Give yourself that first moment of the day to remember who you are before the world tries to define you.
And if the only thing you can manage is a slow sip of coffee with your phone on “Do Not Disturb,” that’s still a ritual. That still counts.
Your Morning, Your Way
You don’t need to overhaul your life.
You don’t need an elaborate morning plan to be more mindful.
You just need a moment that belongs to you—with intention, breath, movement, and maybe a dash of cinnamon in your cup.
Start where you are. Sip slowly. Speak kindly to yourself. And remember:
You are your most important appointment.
